Title : Afropolitanism and the Novel : De-realizing Africa Material Type: printed text Authors: Ashleigh Harris, Author Publisher: New York and London : Routledge Publication Date: 2020 Series: Literary cultures of the global South Pagination: 1 vol. (XI-198 p.) Layout: ill. Size: 23 cm. ISBN (or other code): 978-0-367-23551-2 General note: Bibliogr. p. 185-194 Languages : English (eng) Descriptors: 823 English fiction : novel Keywords: Roman africain Abstract: The place of the novel as a literary form in Africa is contested. Its colonial origins and its unaffordability for most Africans make it a bad fit for the continent, yet it was also central to the creation of most postcolonial African national literary canons. These bipolar traditions remain unresolved in recent debates about Afropolitanism and the novel in Africa today. This book extends this debate, arguing that Africa's 'de-realization' in global representation and the global economy is reflected in the African novel becoming dominated by Afropolitan, rather than African, aesthetics, styles, and forms. Drawing on close readings of a variety of major African novels of the 2000s, the volume traces the tensions between the novel's complicity with and resistance to such de-realization. The book argues that current trends and experiments in African non-realist genres, such as science fiction, magical and animist realism, Afro-futurism, and speculative environmentalism, are the result of a preoccupation with such de-realization. The volume is a significant exploration into literary form and its social, philosophical, political, and economic underpinnings. It will be a must-read for scholars, students, and researchers of African literature, politics, philosophy, and culture studies. Title : Are We Postmodern Yet? : And Were We Ever? Material Type: printed text Authors: Reinhold Kramer, Author Publisher: New York : Palgrave-Macmillan Publication Date: 2019 Pagination: 1 vol. (328 p.) Layout: ill. Size: 21 cm. Languages : English (eng) Descriptors: 823 English fiction : novel Abstract: In this book, Reinhold Kramer explores a variety of important social changes, including the resistance to objective measures of truth, the rise of "How-I-Feel" ethics, the ascendancy of individualism, the immersion in cyber-simulations, the push toward globalization and multilateralism, and the decline of political and religious faiths. He argues that the displacement, since the 1990s, of grand narratives by ego-based narratives and small narratives has proven inadequate, and that selective adherence, pluralist adaptation, and humanism are more worthy replacements. Relying on evolutionary psychology as much as on Charles Taylor, Kramer argues that no single answer is possible to the book title's question, but that the term "postmodernity" - referring to the era, not to postmodernism - still usefully describes major currents within the contemporary world.
